Increased PE Investment in Sports Bound to Impact On-Field Results - yahoo!sports - October 28th, 2021
Conversations with a handful of sports bankers, financiers and club owners suggested the influx of return-oriented investors across the sports ecosystem would likely have both positive (think: ability to buy more/better players, attract free agents) and negative (think: conflicts of interest between generating profits and winning games) implications for the fans of these clubs.
Rugby Attracting Private Equity Investors Including Lasry, Cifu - yahoo!sports - October 26th, 2021
More than most pro sports, rugby depends heavily on gate receipts to thrive. So COVID-19’s toll on the sport has been particularly acute. With many teams now going on 500-plus days with attendance restrictions in place, the pandemic created a host of distressed investment opportunities. As a result, venture capital-like investment opportunities (i.e. low risk, high reward) within rugby have emerged for sports and entertainment-focused private equity investors.
FaZe Clan Announces SPAC Merger, Becoming The First Esports Company To Hit $1 Billion Valuation - Forbes - October 25th, 2021
Esports and entertainment company FaZe Clan announced plans today to become publicly traded through a SPAC deal with B. Riley Principal 150 Merger Corp. The company will raise an estimated $291 million in the transaction, valuing it at $1 billion after the deal closes. It will trade on the Nasdaq under the ticker FAZE.
There’s a Growing Business Case for Investing in Women’s Sports - Bloomberg - October 22nd, 2021
The profit potential for women’s sports is gaining a lot of attention these days.
Los Angeles’s newest team, soccer club Angel City FC is backed by a star-studded list of investors such as Natalie Portman, Uzo Aduba, Eva Longoria, Casey Neistat and Jennifer Garner. Angel City and the National Women’s Soccer League are looking to prove they can be profitable.
Clubs voted through emergency measures to block Newcastle's potential sponsorship deals - The Athletic - October 20th, 2021
In layman’s terms, this would stop Saudia, Saudi Arabia’s national airline, for example, from immediately becoming Newcastle’s next front-of-shirt sponsors. “Other clubs are worried that, next week, Newcastle’s shirt sponsor will be paid off and a new one will appear, agreeing to pay them £100 million a year,” a source said.
Dallas Cowboys Top List of Most Valuable U.S. Sports Franchises - yahoo!sports - October 20th, 2021
The Toronto Maple Leafs are the NHL’s most valuable franchise at $2 billion. It’s a price that few individuals in the world could pay.
That said, the least valuable NFL franchise, the Cincinnati Bengals, is still worth 20% more than the Maple Leafs, which is only the 59th most valuable team in a North American sports league. In fact, all 32 NFL franchises are among the top 50 in both value and revenue.
Endeavor and private equity investor Silver Lake seeking to buy trove of minor league baseball teams - The Athletic - October 20th, 2021
Sports and entertainment agency Endeavor, and its private equity investor Silver Lake, is in talks to buy up to a dozen minor league teams, with aspirations of potentially owning 40 or more of Minor League Baseball’s 120 teams over time, sources said. Endeavor is already a force in sports, in part through ownership of UFC, talent agency WME, and a host of marketing, licensing, and agent divisions. The pursuit of so many teams doesn’t amount to a fait accompli, but Endeavor is making attractive offers.
Why the Kings Are the Darlings of NBA Institutional Investors - yahoo!sports - October 6th, 2021
Arctos Sports Partners and Dyal Capital have seen inherent value in the Kings, recently gobbling up LP interests (Arctos bought the stakes previously owned by Mark Friedman, Brad Jenkins, Mark Mastrov, Andy Miller and Kevin Nagle). Arctos has acquired 17% of the club in aggregate, in a deal that valued the club at $1.8 billion; Dyal upped its stake from less than 5% to between 5-10% with a series of acquisitions at the same valuation.
