Recent Sports M&A News and Developments
Browns Owners Agree to Buy Marc Lasry’s Bucks Stake - Front Office Sports - February 27th, 2023
Marc Lasry is selling his stake in the Milwaukee Bucks to Cleveland Browns owners Jimmy and Dee Haslam, a source confirmed to Front Office Sports.
Pending league approval, the stake sale would put the 2021 NBA champions at a $3.5 billion valuation — the third-highest for a U.S. pro sports team and the second-highest for an NBA team.
The valuation trails only the Phoenix Suns in the NBA, which Mat Ishbia purchased from Robert Server earlier this month at a $4 billion valuation. Lasry reportedly previously considered selling his stake to Ishbia before the latter purchased the Suns in December 2022.
Manchester United a Billion-Dollar Win for Glazers Even Before Impending Sale - Sportico - February 22nd, 2023
After nearly two decades, the Glazer family’s ownership of Manchester United is likely coming to an end. Initial bids for the iconic English soccer team were due Friday—two bids were made public, and at least one came in around the $5.95 billion valuation projected by Sportico in its recent English Premier League ratings.
Whatever the final sale price turns out to be, the Florida-based family, whose patriarch, Malcolm Glazer, acquired the team in 2005, has already seen profits well over a billion dollars from the club.
NBA Teams Drawing Interest From Qatar, Abu Dhabi - Front Office Sports - February 21st, 2023
The NBA has opened the door to sovereign wealth funds — and some of the world’s biggest want to buy in.
Qatar Investment Authority and Abu Dhabi’s fund Mubadala Capital have both shown interest in NBA teams, according to Bloomberg. The funds have a respective $450 billion and $284 billion in assets under management.
The league’s board of governors voted in December to allow sovereign wealth funds to buy up to 20% of a team, subject to league approval.
Could F1 expand team representation to Asia? - Sports Pundit - February 17th, 2023
Wednesday (February 15th) was set by FIA as the preliminary date for applications to expand Formula 1 beyond 10 teams.
How many teams they will add is a matter of speculation, however, two or more teams are thought to be willing to pay the more than $200 million it will take, according to Sportico.
Michael Andretti and General Motors announced last month they had teamed up to field an entry. This bid is compelling as it would provide additional American representation (alongside Haas) for the series, a region of significant recent growth.
The other, Panthera Team Asia, would also seek to expand the league’s fan base beyond its western European core. As the first team based in Asia, they could provide important representation for Formula 1 and Liberty Media.

The ownership group wants to create ‘synergy amongst clubs’ in its portfolio.
